If you are choosing a progressive house track to buy or finish this week, the Beatport Top 100 has a clear answer on tempo: 74 of the 100 tracks sit between 122 and 125 BPM, and 94 fall inside 120 to 126. Bedrock Records holds the top two spots, both from Simon Vuarambon's October 9 release: his original 'Grey Area' at No. 1 and his rework of Josh Wink's 'Metro' at No. 2.
What the numbers say
The chart is moving fast. 53 of the 100 tracks came out in the last 30 days, and 20 were released on or after October 20, though none of those has reached the top 10 yet. Labels are spread thin: Early Morning has the most entries with eight, Bedrock has seven and Global Underground five, so no single imprint controls the sound.
The keys split exactly 50/50 between major and minor, which is unusual next to darker genres. Four of the top 10 are in C major at 123 BPM. Tracks are long, too: the average runs about seven minutes, and at least 23 of the 100 are remixes or reworks.
For buyers
A track at 122-125 BPM drops straight into the sets that are driving these sales. Because the chart turns over so quickly, a strong release on a mid-sized label can still break in, and a major-key, melodic record is not a handicap here. For producers
Write at 122-124 BPM and give the arrangement room: long, DJ-friendly intros and outros matter in a chart where seven minutes is normal. Remixes are a real route in, with almost a quarter of the chart made up of reworks. Do not avoid major keys; half the chart uses them.
