Brian Eno is relaunching Opal Records, the ambient label he founded in 1988 and mostly shelved after 1991 aside from occasional Record Store Day one-offs. The relaunch opens with two reissues on October 16: Another Day on Earth (2005) and Drawn From Life (2002, with J. Peter Schwalm) — both previously available only as Japanese imports.
Eno called Opal a "label for outsiders" when he started it, built to release work from artists working at the margins of pop culture. One percent of sales from the reissues goes to EarthPercent, his environmental fund, and he's marking the relaunch with previously unreleased live footage from Porto Festival 2001 and Fuji Rock 2001.
For anyone building an ambient or downtempo catalogue, a dormant legacy label coming back with a real release calendar is worth watching — Eno has said more releases are planned beyond the two reissues.
